Piggyback Song Adaptation by Stephen Fite
Design by Jennifer Knopf at Herding Kats in Kindergarten
This book and piggyback song can be put to use in several different ways within your classroom. It can be used as an introduction tool the first few days/weeks of school. You can also try it as a way of introducing your Star or Helper of the Day. The concept is very simple: Have a photo of one of your students attached with Velcro to the appropriate “Our STAR” page within the book. Sing the song together with the children but do not turn the page once you have sung the last line of the song. Begin giving clues to the class about the STAR. You might say, “This person is a boy. He has brown hair. He is wearing a blue shirt. His name begins with the letter S.” Once the STAR has been identified, turn the page to reveal the picture of the child. Turn the page once more to sing the last two lines of the song. To add a literacy component, tape the name of each child to the bottom of their picture.
